Dynamic Digital Menu Boards allow clients to present their menu and advertise their business using a large flat screen TV. Menu boards can be used to list a restaurant's fare, or provide a dynamic slideshow with photos of your restaurant's dishes.

The Revel Systems Dynamic Digital Menu Boards feature operates on Samsung Smart TVs, which are available in several sizes. The Samsung Smart TV’s built-in WiFi allows clients to download the Revel application directly from the internet, thus eliminating the need for additional hardware.

The Revel Dynamic Digital Menu Boards software is designed to communicate seamlessly with the management console. Changes made on the Management console are automatically pushed to the Dynamic Digital Menu Boards.


The Digital Menu Board software was created to work with Samsung Smart TV’s. Currently, the list of compatible models is as follows:

IMPORTANT: TVs must have Smart Hub/Smart TV capabilities.

J-Series: UN48J5200AFXZA Only via USB. (For optimal performance, it's recommended to keep J-Series TVs powered on. Shutting off these TVs while the USB drive is inserted requires reload of the Revel software after you turn them on again.)

H-series (2014 release): H5000, H6000, H7000, H8000 series (search app or use USB)
F-series (2013 release): F4000, F5000, F6000, F7000 ,F8000 Only via USB

Note that the EH model (2012 release) need to have the firmware + software upgraded. Then app can run only via USB.

The FH model are NOT compatible with the Revel Digital Menu Boards application. 

Additionally, when loading the application on the TV, the H-series will allow you to search for the app through their SmartHub, and both the H-series and F-series will be able to load the application from the USB drive.


An alternative solution for loading the digital menu board on the TV would be through the web browser if using the application is not an option. A link can be provided for load into the URL bar. Depending on the model TV, you may be able to hide the address bar so the screen only displays the menu board.

If the TV does not have internet capabilities (such as J4000), any devices that connect to the TV that has a web browser may also work such as a Chromestick or Apple TV.

Please contact Support to make sure if this solution works for your case.


Setting up a Board

To begin setting up the images and text to be displayed on the Menu Board, log into your management console and click on the Products tab. On the left-hand side, click on Digital Menu Boards. On this screen, click Add Item. If you do not see the Digital Menu Boards tab, please call Technical Support. After confirming that the licenses have been purchased, they will enable the Menu Boards for you.

The only required field in this window is the Display Board Name. Enter the desired name (any naming convention is fine) for that particular board.

All other fields in this window are optional. Fill them out as needed.

Interval Time (sec) – For clients who use more than one page. Enter the amount of time that each page is to be displayed before the screen changes to the next image.

Show Page Markers – Display page markers on the bottom of the screen. Select the desired color of page markers (transparent by default).

Show Page Padding – Display padding around the edge of the board.

Background Color – Color of the board that is applied to all board pages for any white space on the board (transparent by default).

Border Color – Select the color of the border that is applied to all board pages (white by default).

Slide Animation Type – Choose between Animated Page Slide or Simple Slide. Animated Page will show the first slide sliding off the screen to the left to show the following slide, whereas Simple will just switch from one image to the next.

Once you have entered all information for the Board, click Add Board.

Setting up a Page

The Add Page button will be available immediately after adding a Board. However, to navigate to the Pages from the dashboard, click on the Products tab on the management console, and click on Digital Menu Boards on the left-hand side. Locate the Digital Menu Board you would like to edit, and click on the Edit button to enter the Board’s details. Once in the details, click Add Page.

Note that at least one page needs to be added for any Digital Menu Board. There are four types of Pages that clients can choose from 

1 Page Spread Image Layout

After clicking Add Page, enter the name of the page in the Page Title textbox.

Under Display type, select 1 Page Spread Image.

Then, enter the order number of the page in the Order textbox. This setting defines the order in which the pages of your board will display if there are multiple pages.

After the fields have been filled out, click the Save button. Once it saved, a field for image upload will be populated. Fill out the fields according to the instructions laid out in the Configuring Columns section.

2-Column/3-Column Layout

After clicking Add Page, enter the name of the page in the Page Title textbox.

Under Display type, select 2 Columns or 3 Columns. This will populate an additional Selections field at the bottom of the Order field.

Enter the order number of the page in the Order textbox. This setting defines the order in which the pages of your board will display if there are multiple pages.

In the Selections drop down, select a column type for Column 1 and Column 2. Note that there are three possible choices:

  • Image – Displays an image. Can be sourced from a URL or a file on your computer.
  • Custom Menu – Displays the availability of your menu as defined in Custom Menu.
  • User Text – Displays text input by the client. A widget will be available to configure the text.

Once you hit Save, additional options will appear to configure the columns. Note that the Layout Section with Display Header and Display Footer will ONLY appear for the 2-Column/3-Column Layout.

Display Header/Display Footer – Use this if you would like to configure a header to appear at the top of the digital menu board. You can include an image with text, as well as align each element separately.

Layout Options

Please fill out the remaining fields according to the instructions laid out in the Configuring Columns section.

8 Product Tile Layout

After clicking Add Page, enter the name of the page in the Page Title textbox.

Under Display type, select 8 Product Tile.

Enter the order number of the page in the Order textbox. This setting defines the order in which the pages of your board will display if there are multiple pages. Click the floppy disk icon to save. 

Once saved, the following additional fields will appear. Please configure these to complete the 8-Product Tile Digital Menu Board setup:

Default Font Color – Color of text to appear on the menu board. Black by default.
Background Color – Color of background of the tiles. Transparent/White by default.

Display Product Name – Displays the name of the Product on every tile
Display Price – Displays the price of the Product on every tile
Display Tile Number – Displays number of tile. Default is 1-8 across the menu board. Adjust Start Numbering At to change the numbering scheme.

Font Size and Font Color can be adjusted as well for the tiles. After the main settings have been configured, go into each individual tile and set the details for what will appear on the tiles themselves.

To do so, click the Product textbox for Tile 1 and start typing a product name. A list will populate with products with close matches. Select the desired one from the list. If the product already has an image attached, the image will be displayed within the tile. There is no need to re-upload an image or paste the same URL.

If you would like to display a different image for the tile, click Use URL or Browse and Upload. Any image uploaded here will override any image that may have been associated with the product under Product Details.

Repeat these steps for Tiles 2-8. Once all tiles have been configured, click Save.

Configuring Columns

There are three kinds of columns that can be configured for 2-Column and 3-Column Layouts.

*Note that the 1 Page Spread Image ONLY uses the Image Column for configuration.

Image Column

There are two ways to upload an image to the Image Column.

Use URL – If the image you would like to use is hosted on the Internet, use this option to enter the URL where the image is hosted (usually ends in .jpg or .png, for example:

Browse and Upload – If the image you would like to use is located locally on your computer, use this option to upload that image from your computer.

There are two other optional settings in addition to the image that can be configured:

Background Color – This will set the background color of the column. Transparent by default. If the image does not take up the entire column, the remaining space will be filled with this color.

Stretch to Fit – This will stretch the selected image to fill the entire column. It will expand the image proportionally and crop out the remainder of the image.

Once all settings have been configured, click Save.

Custom Menu Column

Creating a Custom Menu

To create a Custom Menu, log into your management console and click on the Products tab. From here, click on Custom Menus on the left-hand Side.

In the New Custom Menu Name textbox, enter the name for your custom menu, select Mode for the Application Type, and select Menu Board for the Mode/Stations from the drop down menu. After these fields have been filled, click + Create.

Once the Custom Menu has been created, Click on the ( + ) sign to the right of the menu to populate the Time Slots and Included Products drop-down lists.

Time Slots: Click on the ( + ) sign to the left of Time Slots. To edit the Timeslot, click Edit Timeslot. This will populate a list of days and times that you would want the custom menu to be visible to customers. This may be useful if you want to create multiple custom menus with different time slots for the same column to allow your column content to change automatically at a certain time of day (for example, a Breakfast Menu vs. Lunch/Dinner Menu). When you are done setting the Timeslot, click Save Timeslot.

Included Products: In this dropdown list, check items that you would like to appear on the menu board.

Click Save to save the custom menu settings.

Custom Menu Column Setup

Once the Custom Menu is created, Click the Products Menu textbox and select the custom menu of your choice. You can select several Custom Menus ONLY if the custom menus are active during mutually exclusive timeslots.

You can also set the following additional settings:

Background color – Transparent/White by default

Display Categories – Displays category names in the Menu. Allows clients to adjust the font of the Category Name, alignment of the text, whether it is underlined, and the background color for that particular text.
Display Categories Descriptions – Displays category descriptions in the menu. Font size and color are adjustable.
Display Sub-Category Names – Displays sub-category names. Like Display Categories, it also allows clients to adjust font, alignment, underlining, and background color.
Display Sub-Categories Descriptions – Displays sub-category descriptions in the menu. Font size and color are adjustable.
Display Product Names – This setting will always be enabled. Displays products on the menu. Font size and color are adjustable.
Display Product Descriptions – Displays product descriptions on the menu. Font size and color are adjustable.
Display Product Price – Displays the prices of products on the menu. Font color is adjustable.

Text Column

To configure a text column, enter the text you wish to display on the board. Use the editor features to customize text settings.

Once all necessary text has been entered, click Save.

Previewing your Menu Board

Clients can opt to preview the board within their internet browser, allowing them the see a basic representation of how the board will look. However, it is highly suggested that you preview the board on the actual TV used to for the menu board, as the screen size will affect how the content is displayed.

To preview the Menu Board, click on the eye button to the right of the menu board you would like to preview. This will open up a new tab with your digital menu board. 

You can also preview it by clicking on the Edit button, and then clicking on Preview on the Board details screen.



When the new tab is open and the digital menu board is visible, take note of the address in the address bar. You will need the URL instance and PIN when loading the menu board onto the Samsung Smart TV.

In the above example:
           The URL Instance is: test
           The PIN is: 93918470

Loading the Digital Menu Board

There are two ways to load a Digital Menu Board on Samsung Smart TVs.

  1. Download the Revel Dynamic Digital Menu Boards application, unzip/decompress the package on your computer, then save the entire unzipped RevelDmbTv folder to a USB flash drive (FAT32 format).
  2. Plug the USB drive into one of the available USB ports on your Samsung TV. 
  3. On the Samsung Smart TV (H-series), open up the SmartHub by pressing the SmartHub button on the remote, and press the Search button on the remote as well. On the TV screen, type in revel and the Revel Digital Menu Board should be the first application available. 

Samsung Series 6 customers: On Samsung 6000-model TVs (H6200, H6400, H6500, etc.), you can find the Revel app in the Smart Hub > Samsung Apps > My Apps > RevelDmb directory after you insert your USB drive. Search Function: Results for “Revel”

Once you have the application, highlight the app icon by moving the cursor over the app and press Enter to load the application.

Note that there are two icons that reflect the same application. The icon with the Samsung brand will appear if the application was loaded using a USB drive, and the blue Revel logo icon will appear if loaded directly from Samsung’s search feature.

On the following screen, enter the board name and the board pin you noted when previewing the board by pressing the -> button on the remote. This will populate a keyboard that will allow you to input the Instance URL and the Board PIN.


When both fields have been filled, move the cursor down to OK and press the Enter button. The Digital Menu Board will now be displayed.
