Master Product Settings Guide

When editing a product's settings, there's a wide variety of options available, from the basic options, such as price and discount eligibility, to the advanced vertical-specific and inventory settings.

This article is a master guide designed to summarize every product setting. When more detailed articles are available for a specific setting, we'll link to those.

Basic Product Details

A product's basic details include the essentials required to sell the product, including the product's name and description, price, and discount eligibility.

Setting Description
Name The name of the product as it displays on the Management Console and point of sale. This field is required.
Description The product's description. This appears on the item details and, if settings permit, on the receipt.
Product Class The class of the product, as used in reporting. Learn about product classes.
Barcode The product barcode. This is a number between 4 and 15 digits. Each product must have a unique barcode. If you do not enter a barcode, the Management Console will create a barcode for you.
Price embedded Check this box if the product barcode includes an embedded price. Learn more about price embedded barcodes.
SKU The SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) of the product. It must be at least 4 digits long and unique for each product. Products must have a barcode or SKU in order to use the import feature.
Cost The cost to purchase the product from the vendor. Reports use cost to calculate profit by subtracting the cost from the price.
Ing. Cost The product cost as calculated from the ingredients. If Settings > Inventory Settings > Use Inventory Cost is enabled, the Point of Sale will derive product cost from the Inventory. If Settings > Inventory Settings > Use ingredient cost to calculate product cost is enabled, Revel will use the sum cost of a product's ingredients to determine the product's cost and display it in this field. Otherwise, Revel uses the cost manually entered in the Cost field above, and the Ing. Cost field will not display.
Price The price customers pay for the product. This field is required.
Price Tiers Price Tiers allow you to set alternate prices for each product. For example, if you have a different price for your happy hour menu, you can enter an alternative price here, create a discount based on the alternative price, and mark that price as active. Allow price override If enabled, employees may override the product price in the point of sale. This feature is disabled by default. Learn about enabling price overrides.
Eligible for Discounts If enabled, the product is eligible for discounts. You can then configure discounts separately. This feature is enabled by default.
Product Groups The product groups that this product belongs to. This is useful for creating discounts and combo items. Learn more about creating product groups.
Custom Menus The menus that the product appears on. For example, you may have separate menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If a product does not appear on a custom menu, then it appears at all times on the point of sale. Learn about creating custom menus.
Active If enabled, the product appears on menus and in reporting. Only active products appear in menus and reports. Active products also appear in the main Products page in the Management Console when the Show Active filter is used.
Alternate lookup If you have an alternate ID for this specific item, enter it in this field. This ID does not have to be unique per product. For example, you can enter lookup terms like cashmere, red, the specific code, and so on. You can also enter as many alternate lookup IDs as you’d like.

Basic Product Details - Pricing Options

Setting Description
Max Price The maximum price that can be charged for the product, including any modifiers. Any additional modifiers that would make the price exceed this amount are free.
Minimum Price The lowest possible price that can be set for this product. If you change the price to be below this price, the Management Console will prompt you to change the price.
Maximum Price The highest possible price that can be set for this product. If you change the price to be above this price, the Management Console will prompt you to change the price.
Recommended Retail Price The recommended retail price as set by your corporate pricing team. Compare to MSRP, which is separate.
Sold by weight Check this box if the product is sold by weight or volume. This option is automatically enabled for fuel products.
Tare The weight of the container. This field appears only if Sold by weight is enabled.
Variable pricing Check this box if the product decreases in price if sold in quantity. Revel supports variable pricing by weight and quantity. These options display after checking the Variable pricing box. Learn how to set up variable pricing.
Group combo Check this box to indicate that this product is a combo that sells other products together for a discount. After saving your changes, new options appear below the group combo setting, allowing you to enter the settings for the group combo. Learn about creating group combos.
Set price per group for Group Combo Check this box to set the price for each product group in a group combo.
Product Set Name The name of the product set, typically the type of product sold in this set.
Combo Products The individual products that can be selected for this product set. You may select individual products here or product groups in the Combo Product Groups below.
Combo Product Groups The product groups that can be selected for this product set. You may select product groups here or individual products in the Combo Products above.
Quantity The number of items a customer can select from this set.
Is Combo Saving The product that will be repriced to meet the discount offered through the combo. This box should be enabled for exactly one of the combo product sets.
Linked Upsell Combo The upsell combo for which this product is the base product. You must create the upsell combo before assigning it to a product. Learn about creating upsell combos. Note that products associated with upsell combos cannot themselves be combos.
Product Upcharge Amount The extra cost, if any, if this product is substituted for the default product in an upsell combo. The default value in this field is 0, indicating no extra cost. This field appears when no upsell combo is selected from the Linked Upsell Combo setting.
Upsell Combo Price The extra cost, if any, if this product is selected as the base product in an upsell combo. This field only appears when an upsell combo is selected from the Linked Upsell Combo setting. This price overrides the price associated with the upsell combo, even if the price entered here is less than the additional price of the upsell combo. If no price is input, the price on the upsell combo will be added to the base product to generate the total price.

Basic Product Details - Tax Options

Setting Description
Tax Groups The tax groups that apply to this product. If no group is select, the prevailing tax will apply. Learn about creating tax groups.
Flat Rate Tax Units The number of units by which a flat tax will be applied for this product. Learn about setting up flat taxes.
Active taxes The taxes that will be applied to the product. This includes any taxes previously selected from the Tax Groups above.
Tax class The tax class, used in support of regional regulations. This typically applies only in Ontario. Learn more about tax classes.
Is cold If checked, the item will not be taxed on to go orders. Learn about setting up Is Cold for items.
Tax included If checked, any taxes are included in the product's price. Learn about tax-inclusive products.
Tax codes Enter any tax codes here. Tax codes are optional and used for integrating with third-party software. Learn about tax codes.

Display/Print Options

Setting Description
Main Category The primary category and subcategory for the product. This field is required.
Additional categories Any additional categories or subcategories for the product. This field is optional.
Image The product's image. This displays on the point of sale. You may upload an image from your computer or directly from a URL. Learn about ideal image sizes. Supported file types are JPG, PNG, and GIF. 
Color code The background color, if any, to use when displaying the product on the Point of Sale.
Disable modifier popup If checked, the popup for modifiers on the Point of Sale is suppressed while keeping modifiers available for the product. Learn about disabling the modifier popup on the Point of Sale.
Printers The kitchen printers or kitchen views that this product will print to. You may select multiple options.
Kitchen print name The name of the product as it displays on kitchen tickets and kitchen views. If this field is blank, the default product name appears on kitchen tickets and kitchen views.
KDS Tags The KDS tags for this product. The list is populated from the selection created in the main settings area. These tags display on the KDS when using Tile Kitchen Production View. You may select a tag multiple times.
Kitchen Description Any additional product details, such as recipe information, to display on kitchen views.
Print Tags Check this box to include this product when automatically printing tags from lists such as Purchase Orders.
Shelf Edge Label Quantity The quantity of shelf edge labels to be printed. Learn more about shelf edge labels.

Advanced Product Details

This section features advanced details you can set for a product, including vertical-specific options.

Matrix Options

Setting Description
Attribute Type For matrix inventory products, select whether this product is a parent or child product. This field is filled in automatically when creating a matrix inventory. If this product is not part of a matrix inventory, select None. Learn more about matrix inventory.

Shipping Options

Setting Description
Product weight The weight of the product, in the unit set in the Product weight unit setting below. You may enter a decimal. This is used to calculate shipping costs.
Product weight unit The unit used to calculate weight. The options are pounds or kilograms. This field is required if a product weight is specified.

Table/Quick Service Options

Setting Description
Course number The course number for the product. If this value is blank, it is assumed to be 0.
Prep/Cook Time The time taken to prep and cook the product, in minutes. Currently used in delivery optimization and for controlling when items appear on the KDS. If the prep time is 0, the item will display immediately, regardless of the prep times of other items in the course or order. Does not apply if you use "Send to Kitchen on Demand".
Is Drink Check this box if the product is a drink or other product prepared at a bar station. Drinks ordered at a bar station will not print to the bar station printer when ordered.
Dining Options Select which dining options are available for this product. If no dining options are selected, then this product appears on all menus.

Rewards Options

Setting Description
Point value The number of reward points accrued when a customer orders this product.
Eligible for purchase rewards If checked, the customer can accrue rewards points when purchasing this product.
Purchase reward multiplier Enter the purchase reward point multiplier for this product. Products with a 1 will accrue points as normal. If you enter 2, your purchase reward points for this item will be doubled. Decimals are permitted.

Retail Options

Setting Description
Commission The amount of commission a salesperson will receive when selling this product. The number entered depends on the commission type. Learn about setting up commission.
Commission type Select whether the commission on this product is a flat amount per product purchase or a percentage of the product's price. This field is required if using commission.
Images An additional jpg, png or gif image for your product to display on the online ordering application, uploaded from your computer or a URL. These images are used in the Revel retail online ordering application. The ideal size is 294 x 392. 
Size Chart A jpg, png or gif image displaying your product's size chart, uploaded from your computer or a URL. This image is used in the Revel retail online ordering application. We recommend using images no larger than 500 x 400.
Prompt for quantity If checked, the user will be prompted to enter a quantity after selecting the product.
Not Returnable If checked, this item cannot be returned.
MSRP Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price for the product.
Prevent Sales If checked, this item will not be available for sale, typically in the case of product recalls or other safety concerns.
Seasonal Item If checked, this item is a seasonal, holiday-specific, or other temporary item. This field is primarily available for informational purposes.

Grocery Options

Setting Description
Product brand The brand of the product.
Unit size The unit that makes up this product, such as sheets in a roll or slices in a loaf.
Retail This field holds data from certain integrations.
EBT no If checked, the product cannot be purchased with EBT. Products with this field unchecked can be purchased with EBT.
Dept The business department that sells this product, e.g. Dairy or Deli.

Service Options

Setting Description
Is Service Check this box to indicate that this product is a service. Services have duration and may be scheduled using the appointments feature. One may associate specific employees with custom pricing, duration and commissions to services under the Reservations tab. Learn about setting up appointments and reservations.
Service duration The average duration of this service, in minutes. Appointments made for this service will block this length of time.

Third Party Preferences

Setting Description
Third party id The third-party ID used for integration with third party systems.
Display on online and 3rd party applications Revel Online Applications and some third parties use this setting to control which products will display in their application. Please check with your third party for more information.

Customer Age Verification

Setting Description
Customer's age Required minimum age to purchase the product.
Message upon adding Display message upon adding the product to the order.

Comments

Setting Description
Comments Any additional comments about the product. You may export these comments when exporting products.

Inventory

You can set a product's inventory settings in the Inventory section. This section is used if the product itself will be inventoried (as opposed to individual ingredients in a recipe). Learn more about using product inventory settings in Revel.

Setting Description
UOM The Unit of Measure you use to inventory your products.
Require serial number Check this box if this item requires the input and tracking of serial numbers. Learn more about serial numbers.
Do not allow sale of this product without stock on hand If checked, this product cannot be sold at the point of sale when it is out of stock.
Default inventory If checked, this product will appear by default in the iPad inventory management screen.
Track in inventory If unchecked, this item will not appear on the Inventory page or in the inventory reports. It will not be available in Purchase Orders nor will it provoke low threshold alerts.
Bin value The BIN value for this product. You can filter inventory based on BIN.
Threshold When a product's stock number reaches this value, Revel sends you an email alert.
Primary vendor The primary vendor for this product, selectable from the list of existing vendors. Learn more about adding vendors.
Vendor Item ID The ID your primary vendor uses to identify this product.
Reorder unit type The unit you use to reorder this product, selected from the dropdown menu. You can select the default unit of measure or the stock unit.
Default reorder quantity The number of units you typically reorder from this vendor.
Default reorder price The default price per reorder unit that your vendor charges.
Reorder to PAR An inventory par level is a minimum quantity of a product that you keep on hand. Checking this box will use the difference between current inventory and reorder quantity when reordering this product. Leaving this box unchecked will reorder exactly the reorder quantity when reordering this product.
Tax on reorder Check this box if you pay tax when reordering this product.
Stock units The units that a product may be purchased in or accounted for. Enter the stock unit name and the number of the unit to convert to the unit of measure. For example, if your unit of measure if ounces, but you also want to stock in pounds, enter ounces, 16, and select Pounds from the dropdown Units menu. You may enter multiple stock units.
Manufacturer The manufacturer of the product.

Recipe

The recipe options let you create recipes for a product and track your inventory to the ingredient level.

Setting Description
Recipes The combination of ingredients used to prepare this product. Ingredients and products must be added to the Ingredients or Products area before adding them to a recipe. For each ingredient, the options for this setting include:
  • Ingredient: The ingredient used. You may select ingredients or products.
  • Quantity: The quantity of the ingredient or product used. The unit used is set in the ingredient or product's settings.
  • Dynamic Cost: The total cost of the ingredient used in the recipe.
  • Delete: Click this button to remove this ingredient from the recipe.
  • Sort: Entering a number allows you to control the sort order of these ingredients as displayed in the recipe list. Clicking the A-Z icon numbers the ingredients alphabetically.

Prep Recipe Check this box if you prepare this product and consume the ingredients prior to selling the product. If so, you will need to receive the product into inventory using the Prep Recipe page. Otherwise, the ingredients will be consumed at the time of sale.
Recipe Yield The default yield of the Prep Inventory Recipe, in units for measure for the product. Recipe Yield applies only to Prep Inventory Recipes. It is ignored if the recipe is not a Prep Inventory Recipe.

Modifiers

Learn more about creating modifiers and attaching them to products. A given product may have multiple modifier classes available. The below settings are available for each modifier group.

Setting Description
Free The number or value of free modifiers from this group. If you are calculating free modifiers by quantity, enter the number of free modifiers. If you are calculating free modifiers by price, enter a price.
Free Type Whether free modifiers are calculated by quantity or price.
Maximum modifiers per group The maximum number of modifiers. Example: at most six kinds of donuts for a half-dozen.
Minimum modifiers per group The minimum number of modifiers. Example: at least one flavor for wings.
Jump to next group when maximum modifiers selected If selected, the point of sale will automatically jump to the next group of modifiers after selecting the maximum number of modifiers. If there are no other modifier groups, the product will be added to the order after selecting the maximum number of modifiers.
Available Modifiers The modifiers available for this product. You may mark modifiers as active or inactive, select modifiers as the default value, and create a sorting order for the modifiers.

Customer Age Verification

Customer's age Required minimum age to purchase the product.
Message upon adding Display message upon adding the product to the order.

Setting Description
Comments Any additional comments about the product. You may export these comments when exporting products.

Inventory

You can set a product's inventory settings in the Inventory section. This section is used if the product itself will be inventoried (as opposed to individual ingredients in a recipe). Learn more about using product inventory settings in Revel.

Setting Description
UOM The Unit of Measure you use to inventory your products.
Require serial number Check this box if this item requires the input and tracking of serial numbers. Learn more about serial numbers.
Do not allow sale of this product without stock on hand If checked, this product cannot be sold at the point of sale when it is out of stock.
Default inventory If checked, this product will appear by default in the iPad inventory management screen.
Track in inventory If unchecked, this item will not appear on the Inventory page or in the inventory reports. It will not be available in Purchase Orders nor will it provoke low threshold alerts.
Bin value The BIN value for this product. You can filter inventory based on BIN.
Threshold When a product's stock number reaches this value, Revel sends you an email alert.
Primary vendor The primary vendor for this product, selectable from the list of existing vendors. Learn more about adding vendors.
Vendor Item ID The ID your primary vendor uses to identify this product.
Reorder unit type The unit you use to reorder this product, selected from the dropdown menu. You can select the default unit of measure or the stock unit.
Default reorder quantity The number of units you typically reorder from this vendor.
Default reorder price The default price per reorder unit that your vendor charges.
Reorder to PAR An inventory par level is a minimum quantity of a product that you keep on hand. Checking this box will use the difference between current inventory and reorder quantity when reordering this product. Leaving this box unchecked will reorder exactly the reorder quantity when reordering this product.
Tax on reorder Check this box if you pay tax when reordering this product.
Stock units The units that a product may be purchased in or accounted for. Enter the stock unit name and the number of the unit to convert to the unit of measure. For example, if your unit of measure if ounces, but you also want to stock in pounds, enter ounces, 16, and select Pounds from the dropdown Units menu. You may enter multiple stock units.
Manufacturer The manufacturer of the product.

Recipe

The recipe options let you create recipes for a product and track your inventory to the ingredient level.

Setting Description
Recipes The combination of ingredients used to prepare this product. Ingredients and products must be added to the Ingredients or Products area before adding them to a recipe. For each ingredient, the options for this setting include:
  • Ingredient: The ingredient used. You may select ingredients or products.
  • Quantity: The quantity of the ingredient or product used. The unit used is set in the ingredient or product's settings.
  • Dynamic Cost: The total cost of the ingredient used in the recipe.
  • Delete: Click this button to remove this ingredient from the recipe.
  • Sort: Entering a number allows you to control the sort order of these ingredients as displayed in the recipe list. Clicking the A-Z icon numbers the ingredients alphabetically.

Prep Recipe Check this box if you prepare this product and consume the ingredients prior to selling the product. If so, you will need to receive the product into inventory using the Prep Recipe page. Otherwise, the ingredients will be consumed at the time of sale.
Recipe Yield The default yield of the Prep Inventory Recipe, in units for measure for the product. Recipe Yield applies only to Prep Inventory Recipes. It is ignored if the recipe is not a Prep Inventory Recipe.

Modifiers

Learn more about creating modifiers and attaching them to products. A given product may have multiple modifier classes available. The below settings are available for each modifier group.

Setting Description
Free The number or value of free modifiers from this group. If you are calculating free modifiers by quantity, enter the number of free modifiers. If you are calculating free modifiers by price, enter a price.
Free Type Whether free modifiers are calculated by quantity or price.
Maximum modifiers per group The maximum number of modifiers. Example: at most six kinds of donuts for a half-dozen.
Minimum modifiers per group The minimum number of modifiers. Example: at least one flavor for wings.
Jump to next group when maximum modifiers selected If selected, the point of sale will automatically jump to the next group of modifiers after selecting the maximum number of modifiers. If there are no other modifier groups, the product will be added to the order after selecting the maximum number of modifiers.
Available Modifiers The modifiers available for this product. You may mark modifiers as active or inactive, select modifiers as the default value, and create a sorting order for the modifiers.
