How to Import/Export Product Modifiers Using Excel

By Sujin | Updated

Modifiers are used to add variations and flexibility to your product offering without creating an excessively large menu.

You can add modifiers to products manually or en masse using Excel. This article will walk through the process of adding existing modifiers to existing products using the Import/Export feature.

Note: All your modifiers and products must already be created in the Management Console before using the product modifier import/export.

Exporting the Product Modifier Spreadsheet

Before adding modifiers to products, you must export the spreadsheet. To do this:

  1. In the Management Console ([yoursubdomain].revelup.com), navigate to Products.
  2. Click Import/Export in the lower left corner. Choose Product Modifiers from the menu:
  3. In the Export Product Modifiers pop-up, click Export to download all your products and their modifiers. You may also download the template file if you want to start from scratch. Save the exported file.
  4. Open the exported file in Excel.

Working in the Product Modifier Spreadsheet

The exported product modifier spreadsheet shows each product and each modifier. Each row contains a product with one of its modifiers. If a product has six modifiers, that product will appear on six rows, with each modifier appearing on a separate row.

Rows 1-19 in the spreadsheet provide instructions on how to use the sheet. You can leave them there or delete them, but no action is required for those lines.

The columns are as follows:

  • Product Name: This is the name of the product as displayed in the Management Console.
  • Product Barcode: The product barcode. This or the Product SKU must be filled in.
  • Product SKU: The product SKU (Stock Keeping Unit). This or the Product Barcode must be filled in.
  • Modifier Class Name: This is the grouping that your specific modifiers will fall under. For example, Cheese Types, Size, and Dressing Choice could all be modifier classes.
  • Modifier Name: This is the name of the specific modifier. For example, Pepper Jack, Medium, and Ranch.
  • Active: If the active status is Yes, the modifier will be available for use on the Point of Sale. If the status is No, it will not appear on the Point of Sale but can still be accessed on the Management Console.
  • Default: If the modifier is selected by default on this product, enter Yes here. If the modifier is not selected by default, enter No. The modifier will still be selectable if it is active.
  • Override Cost: This setting is required for size modifiers only. If you want to override the cost of a product with a modifier applied, enter it here. For example, if you sell drip coffee in three sizes, you can enter the total cost for the small, medium, and large coffees here. If the modifier is not a size modifier, enter 0 here.
  • Override Price: This setting is required for size modifiers only. If you want to override the price of a product with a modifier applied, enter it here. For example, if you sell drip coffee in three sizes, you can enter the total price for the small, medium, and large coffees here. If the modifier is not a size modifier, enter 0 here.
  • Sort: The order in which the modifiers will appear on the Point of Sale within the modifier class. If this value is 0 or empty, Revel will use the default sort order.

In order to successfully upload your modifier spreadsheet, the Product Name, Product SKU OR Product Barcode, Modifier Class Name, Modifier Name, Active, and Default fields must be filled out. All other fields are optional.

Importing the Product Modifier Spreadsheet

Once you have filled out the spreadsheet following the instructions above, save your file. Then follow these steps:

  1. In the Management Console ([yoursubdomain].revelup.com), navigate to Products.
  2. Click Import/Export in the lower left corner. Choose Product Modifiers from the menu.
  3. In the Import Product Modifiers from File section, click Choose File:
  4. Attach your spreadsheet and click Import.
  5. The upload process occurs offline. You will receive an email with the results of the import. If the email states any errors occurred, fix the issue in the spreadsheet and upload it again.
